Basically just check to make sure there are no nesting birds within the vicinity, then crawl on my belly for about 10 meters - the journey takes around 15 minutes.. I start taking pictures from quite far back and just continue to get closer until they're around an arms length away, and perfectly comfortable with me. It really hurts though as i'm halfway up a rocky mound, and the slightest loose rock can ruin everything..
Nah its pretty much shot off camera, I haven't touched it in photoshop apart from correcting the horizon as it was a little wonky... It is strange as it was a really dull stormy day, and the light hit the gannets for a minute or 2, and it metered off the plumage.
I think this image is outstanding! It delivers exactly what I imagine a Gannet colony to look like. You've got the cramped habitat, the beauty of individual birds, the traffic in the sky and the environment in the clouds all in one picture.
This is a fantastic shot, great drama in the sky and detail in the birds, so much going on - I love it. I'm off to Bass Rock myself in a couple of weeks, hope I come back with an image half as good as this and I'll be happy
cheers

This shot is actually a re-run of last year where I found the perfect spot, only trouble is I was being stupid and stuck an ND Grad on for some reason and everything just looked way off.. so this time round I was keen on doing a much better job!
