My Canon 28-135mm suffers from zoom creep (due to gravity) if it is angled too far up or down. When I had it CLA'd last year I asked them to tighten it up a bit and they did but in no time it was creeping again. Today I was looking at a brand new 50D with a new 28-135mm and noticed it does the same thing. It is a nuisance when I'm shooting with a macro ring and trying to focus. If the camera is pointed downward it changes focal length while I'm working so I'm trying to hold the zoom steady at the same time I'm focusing and shooting. Has anyone here figured a way to easily lock the zoom temporarily? I thought about tape but I don't want something that would leave goo on the lens.

Gaffer tape should work without leaving a residue.

Paper "adhesive tape" (for bandages) that's "gentle," "for sensitive skin," etc. doesn't leave a residue and comes in a dispenser (like regular cellophane tape does).

I wondered about gaffer's tape but I'd have to order it from away. There's no place anywhere near me (NNY between the Adirondacks and the Quebec border) that would carry it so I'll give the paper bandage tip a try. Thanks for the input.
