Moth Larvae.. (ID? Please)
Hi Folks,

I took this a month or two ago and wondered if anyone knows which species it is. I'm wondering abut the Swallow tailed moth larvae but not sure at all.. Your ID would be much appreciated or if you know a man who can..

Cheers,

Brett

Hi Brett,

It certainly looks like one of the geometer family (which includes swallow tailed moth) to me. Do you know what species of plant it was feeding on?

Well, funny enough no.. It was actually crawling up me! When I was doing my newt surveys earlier in the season I was wondering around a pond and it was on my sleeve.. So placed it down in a sheltered spot, got a couple of shots to try for ID and that's the result really.. Now all I need is the ID  Thanks..

A guess at Biston betularia (pepper moth) although the laval stage would ahve been a bit early?

Interesting as i don't think they normally occur in this country but only found in a few parts of the southern regions, but thought to be migrants according to the websites info.. I took this image in Cheshire, so I think I can rule that one out at this point..

Thanks for you time..
