Unable To View Image Thumbnails In Raw Files?

Hi,
Well, I got my laptop back. Before I was able to download my raw files into a folder in my pictures. When I opened the folder, all of the files were displayed as thumbnails, with the image viewable on the front. Now, everything is the same, except that the images are not displayed on the front of the thumbnail. Makes for a lot of fishing around. Any thoughts on how to correct this?

Thanks,
Chris

What are you using to view your raw files and what type of camera is creating them?

Chris, does your laptop have all the latest updates? Sounds like it doesn't have the latest updates from Microsoft/Apple (didn't say which you are using).

Hi guys,
I just use the windows/microsoft download software(wizard) I think. I shoot with a D200. As far as I know, It is the latest version of windows. It's what I used before, without any issues. I use Adobe ACR to view the files once thay are opened. It's when viewing the thumbnails, that it doesn't display the image inside on the thumbnail. So I can't see what the image is. I have to just open it in order to preview what the image is inside the file. I didn't have this problem before.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm guessing that whoever worked on your laptop had to reinstall windows which means it would have lost recognition of non-standard file associations that are usually created during the installation of other software. The recognition of raw files would have been created on installation of either your camera software or more likely, Adobe ACR. I'm not familiar with Adobe ACR but somewhere in your options/preferences you should be able to change the designated file associations. If you uncheck the raw file's accept the change then go back in and re-check them it might re-establish the association. The other option would be to uninstall Adobe ACR and re-install it. If windows was re-installed you may also find out that double-clicking on some files may not open the same application that they used to open.

Something else you might try before re-installing software -- try right clicking on one of your raw files, select "Open with" then "choose program", then select Adobe ACR (or Adobe PS) and make sure the default (or "Always open with the selected application") box is selected before you click OK. That might possibly re-establish the association so that your thumbnails will display properly.

Good luck!
Gary

Chris, this is kind of weird. I have never been able to see a thumbnail image on a RAW file. I always take "RAW+ jpeg" on my camera, so that gives me a nice small jpeg that is right next to the RAW file, and that's how I look through the thumbnails. I have WinXP on one computer and Vista 64 on another, and it's the same on both of them.
Maybe there's something I didn't know about being able to see RAWs? This way works well for me though, as I use those jpegs as a visual index.
