Evening Kite

Still on my bird of prey trail... Wanted to try a slightly different kite in flight shot other than against a blue sky, of which I've seen some great examples here in this forum.

There was a lot of waiting up in the higher grounds (near feeding site) - either the light wasn't there or no kites. Then one evening a single bird flew overhead and slowly turned to give a momentary stare before dissapearing into the distance. My finger was stuck firmly on the shutter button for the brief few seconds until the buffer gave up. This was the one shot that had all the elements I was looking for.

Larger version.

500mm, iso500, 1/800sec, f7.1, -1ev, full frame.

Great shot Des, but I'm affraid not the "classic" which everyone goes for. That doesn't take anything away from the image if that's what you went for. Good to have an aim.

Apart from the gorgeous light and sky, you've also caught the way the kite shapes itself to the air currnets which is one of the most beautiful things about these birds.

Brilliant image, the light and pose are fantastic! Great to see something different from the norm.

Kites with different lighting and BG always a tick in my book. Only nit for me is that the head is looking down and not into the 'negative space' making it seem a little awkward in terms of comp which doesn't sit right IMO.

I like this but to me it is one of those pictures that one needs to big, it needs an A2 print to do it justice and bring out the real menace in the pose of the kite.

I really like this actually, i've looked at it about 5 times before coming back to comment on it...

Its so nearly a show stopper I think, the sky makes it so atmospheric, I just echo Brett's comments regarding it looking into the wrong area.. Maybe it would work better dead central - its still very nice though, and a good take on something which is done a lot.
