image uploading problem

All of the sudden, I'm having problems simply uploading images. My basice procedure lately has been plugging in my Canon 40D and using Photoshop Elements 5.0 uploader. Every time I try to upload, I get a message saying I don't have permission to write to the specified folder. Worth noting, it only happens when I try to upload to an external hard drive...I've tried it with two totally different brands and the same message comes up. I can upload onto my main drive.

I'm not sure if this relates to your problem, but I constantly have problems with one of my external drives. Windows Vista chooses to consider it write protected. There are many Google results on this one.
