Black Bellied Whistling Duck
One of several hanging out at the Village Creek Drying Beds in far NE Fort Worth, TX. The site is an old wastewater sludge treatment system consisting of several lagoons. Out of service for many years, the site has become a wetland haven for local birds.

This is one of my most favorite species of waterfowl. The duck looks fine as do the bits if the background that are golden.

I've never seen one of these before. An attractive specimen with its burgandy & black coat.

nice capture, these are pretty rare in Kansas though more have been reported in the last couple years. In July 2006, I found a pair at Quivira NWR and after reporting the birds, a large number of Kansas birders ventured there to find them. I believe it was the 12th official record of BBWD in Kansas at that time, but like I said more have been seen in the last couple years.
