Another different look at RMNP
This one's for Joshua with his great "different" look on RMNP series. I made 2 sunrise trips to RMNP this past weekend, this one was from the first trip (same as the Never Summer images).
I was on the hunt for Marmot's and Pika's, came across this interesting rock formation.

As soon as I saw the rock and moon togther, I had a vision that this I could work with in B&W. I blended 2 exposures togther, one for sky, one for rock. Plain ole B&W didn't produce the image I was after, so I did some major contrast adjusting to get to this and to what I envisioned in the field.

The moon I shot pre-sunrise with my 100-400L lens, the orginal composition of this had a very small moon, so digitally I pasted in the larger moon, scaled it down a little, placed it over smaller one.

Thoughts? EDIT: see orginal below.

Cool image Nick! The rock looks almost alien to me. I like it!

This is very cool, looks other-worldly. The textures of the rock translate wonderfully to B&W and I think the amount of contrast is perfect. The moon blend looks good too. Thanks for posting this!

This is nice but the first thing I thought, before reading your post, is that the moon just doesn't look real here. I think I'd like it better with the small moon.

Thanks Grant, here's the original "real" for comparison.

Nick,

Really like the image...excellent "vision" for the image and excellent outcome after your pp'ing.

This is a superb b&w image.
You did a great job with realizing your vision and with the conversion itself.

As for the moon, I admittedly didn't catch anything out of sorts.
The size does seem to compete some with that wonderful rock formation, though.
However, the original moon is far too small to do this image justice.
What about a bit of a smaller moon in your first post?

Excellent images. Something didn't look right with the moon in the original image, but it dind't set off major alarms in my head. In the end I believed it. The small moon image is just as compelling to me. Overall both are excellent IMO.

Thanks guys for the helpful input, so here's the compromise version, I think it does look a little more believable!.

That last one is it. The whole time I'm looking at the different versions and thinking, "How about something in between?", and then you did it. Perfect!

Very nice. Really looks dramatic.
