Puffin + front focus correction
Hi to all,

Puffin, photographed on Skomer back in May, with the exception of the blown whites on the chest and the virtual feet I quite like the shot, thanks for looking.

Processed in DPP / CS2 ( Cropped )

1D3, 500F4IS+1.4tc, Gitzo, Wimberley
1/400th @ F5.6 iso800

A quick question, is it easy to calibrate the 500F4 to the 1D3 in camera or am I best off sending it away to a service centre to let the pro's do this ???

Cheers

Andy...

Yes, a classic Puffin image well up to your usual standard. Very nice indeed. As to lens callibration this is recommended reading on the DPReview Sigma Users' Forum.

Hi Julian,

Yes, the lense is a Canon 500F4IS and yes the 1D3 has been in for the fix, though results are still inconsistent, Elstree is a little out of my way, I think the nearest service centre is Lehmanns at Stoke on Trent, think I might let them have a crack at the calibration.

Cheers and thanks for the comments.

Hi Andy

I would recommend that you send it to Elstree with no hesitation. The reason being, another member here did exactly what you are suggesting, double checked that the repair service offered this facility before driving, drove about 80 miles round trip, only to be told that they were unable to calibrate and that he had been given the wrong advice! He then went to Elstree.

In addition, you might also want to take (if you have it) the 1.4 extender too, so they calibrate both. When you do get it back ask them what they have done. Only that if you purchase a second body you need to ensure the body is paired to the lens, not the other way round. I have had both MKIII's done with the above, 300 f/2.8 & 70-200 f/2.8. The cost for the 500 approx £130, plus extender another say £60 (plus VAT?).

Turnaround might be 10-14 days, but check. If you are a CPS member it is less. I just had a repair done had it back within 2 days having dropped it off.

If you are still unsure call them, there is a really helpful guy there (Gavin), but anyone there is good IMHO and it might just be worth a call.

A good, sharp portrait. The highlights don't look so far gone as to spoil the image (at least not on my screen) and the composition and small part of the feet that are showing works fine IMHO.

Nice image Andy, I like the background and that eye is nicely detailed.

I calibrate my lenses using a Lens Align kit from the US, not cheap but I find the results are very consistent and easily repeated compared to my own poorly constructed devices. Lenses do require repeat calibration over time so I think its worth it.
