I have the above monitor and a Spyder3 Elite colorimeter. I want to profile this monitor as best I can with what I have. I do not have the funds to buy Xbrite or high end stuff that has been recommended in the past. The biggest problem I seem to have is in preparing this monitor for calibration. If I click on factory defaults, it is way to bright. I have the RGBs' all set to 50%, brightness and contrast to 50%...cant find a white balance adjustment. Any ideas without investing a lot of money? Also I'm using DVI input..should I switch to VGA?
Jack, try setting your monitor's brightness to about 10% (you may even find 8% or 5 % is the right number) and leaving the contrast at 100%. then run the calibration process. I think your RGB of 50% is about right for the Spyder to work from. The Spyder should adjust the white balance.
As Ed noted, the 'white balance adjustment' is part and parcel of the actual calibration.
As far as the brightness, why not just turn it down 'til it matches a print you've recently had done using this monitor?
