Save for the web color shift

Not sure if its the right forum but I will shoot it anyway. I have both MacBook Pro and PC, edit photos in both of them as I feel convenient. Both are calibrated with same calibration s/w and same settings (gamma 2.2 and 6500K). I use PS3 and my workspace is set to Adobe RGB. When I "save for web" in PC and view the jpeg on Mac, the colors tends to shift, especially the blues shifts towards cyan. When I save the same file in Mac and view on PC, the reds are shifted towards magenta, slightly. I have tried converting it to srgb, without it, converting to monitor profile, without any effect. In fact, the colors are saturated when I convert to srgb before saving for the web. As far as I know, converting to srgb shouldn't be a problem since for color unmanaged browser, it should work. In "save for the web" dialog box, I also see that there is something called "Uncompensated color", "Standard Windows color", "Standard Machintosh color" and "Use document color profile" and when checked, each gives different result. What are these and what should be checked ?

I am inclined towards thinking that its my workspace color management settings that is causing the problem. So last night I tried viewing some post on NPN both on Mac and PC side by side - some pics have the same effect as I am experiencing, while some doesn't. This leads me to believe that the something is wrong with my setup.

So my question is what procedure you guys follow ? What profile do you convert to before saving the file and what is the workspace profile ? Any help appreciated.

thanks,
debjit

I don't know if this helps... but when I save for web, a number of weird things happen, if I view the image on my Mac with quick preview and a few other programs. But when I load it onto the web they look fine on all the computers I've tried..

Always convert to sRGB before posting on the web, that should take care of everything. But save for web also strips out the profile I believe, so in a color managed application that's not expecting sRGB, it may look off. That, at least, is my theory, which is quite possibly wrong..

Sounds pretty complicated Debjit. Here is my method. I'm still just keeping it simple by bypassing save for the web.

ProPhotoRGB

It's the 3rd topic on the page. I don't write much so I'm glad to find a reader.

Debjit, not sure what you are seeing as a finished product overall, but I find the conversion in CS2 almost transparent from Adobe RGB 1998 workspace to sRGB. I typically convert from TIFF to JPEG, then convert from Adobe RGB 1998 workspace to sRGB, resize for web using Marc's sharpening, then Save For Web for correct posting limitations. I do see very slight changes througout the process, but more of color intensity droppping off just a bit then any color shifts or anything dramatic. I do use a PC and not a MAC.

Thank you all for the suggestion. Converting to srgb seems to solve one set of problem, in a way that the colors are consistent across MAC and PC but they aren't within CS3 and image viewer on the same system. I downloaded a profile chart and tested my monitor profile to check if it was bad or not. The test passed. So I am more confused now

Steve, yes, its indeed complicated. I wish I didn't have both the system :-) ProPhotoRGB looks interesting. I have yet to try this.

Paul, you are right. CS2 never gave a problem. I hear over the internet the CS3 has some issues for save for the web but unfortunately any of the proposed solution didn't work for me. I am still scrambling my head over it.

Hey Debjit,
I have never used save for web ever! I just do my normal processing, then resize using Marc's sharpening technique. Then I convert to sRGB, and use "SAVE AS" and save a websized jpeg, and a full sized TIFF. I have never experienced the inconsistencies you describe. I have always just used a pc though. Good luck.

Debjit, the 'internet' is not color managed...well, kind of. Complicated but suffice it to say some browsers honor color profiles and others don't.
