Bagworm moths cocoons
I've seen these all my life and never knew what crawls out of them. Found this one in my backyard hanging from a tree limb. All I know is that this caterpillar builds a cocoon using leaves and twigs then dies with the eggs in her body.

Is this the Evergreen Bagworm Moth (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis)?

This is the front and backside.

I also learned that butterflies make chrysalis and moths make cocoons. I must have missed that part in school.

Nice detail of the cocoons Mike. The lighting makes the details stand out very well. I had a bunch of these critters in my Bald Cypress trees last year and they almost wiped out the leaves in one days time.

The bagworms around here can reak havoc if left unchecked. I know they're just doing their thing but it comes at the expense of some beautiful living creatures that I'd just soon keep around. Thanks for sharing.
