Good evening all,
Could someone please confirm if this is a baby coot? I saw a lot of coots in the area when I was trekking around the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Other pictures I've seen of baby coots have an orange beak where as this one is black with a small white stripe towards the tip. Unfortunately, this cute little guy only showed himself for a few seconds and this was the best shot I could get of him. It has a lot of distracting elements, but I kind of like it.
Thanks,
Charles

Like you, I've seen lots of baby coots with orange on the beak.
I've also seen lots of baby purple gallinules with the white stripe plus orange on the beak.
I haven't seen one with just the stripe, plus this one has some white behind the eye.
We need a birder.

Thanks Lance! So far it looks like this chick most resembles a downy baby purple gallinule. They do reside in southern GA during this time for breeding and do not yet have any color in their feathers (according to AllAboutBirds.org). Still trying to sort out my Coots, Moorhens and now Gallinules...
