I was trying my "Jeroen Stel" flash set. I spend a fwe hours next to the last bush I had in my garden. I met a lot of small creatures in it. This is one of them. I suppose most of you don't like it but I do and I can not help that.
This one reminds me of the monsters from outerspace often used in the Donald Duck magazine I know from my youth (no traumas left by the way).
Exposure time 1/200 s
F-number f/9
Exposure program Manual
ISO speed ratings ISO 100
Focal length 180 mm
Focus mode MF
Cropped a little on all sides to make it more look like a monster :)

Not sure whether I like this one. One side of me says I would prefer to see the entire insect, while the other says a smaller detail would be better, ie. just the head perhaps.
Stunning detail on what you have, but I am unsure of the comp.
Judging by the wing balance organs its what we call a cranefly, not a mosquito.
Nice effort, macro is not as easy as some of the masters who post here would make you think. For me the depth of field is just slightly shallow, it really needed the mouthparts to be in focus to match the eyes rather than just the thorax region
@Mike, you're right it is a cranefly. In Dutch we call them "muggen" (musquito's), so I did a wrong translation. Apologies for that. Thanks for correcting me.
Superb detail on this one.
Agree the soft mouth spoils it a bit and the bright diagonal line in the back.

Yes I like the detail you have achieved with f9. I would have used at least f16 with flash to increae DOF and perhaps stacked images, as craneflies can be very obliging sometimes and remain completely still for long periods. I like the colours you have obtained. We need more fly images IMHO so keep them coming.
@david
I'll try to get more flies for you (and for myself), becuase I noticed there are very much different en very colorfull flies. I put them in this forum if I have a new one.

Just an opinion..
The detail is spot on though, just the composition ?
