Sika Deer
Taken on Saturday at Knole Park, this female was taking good care of her two youngsters continually grooming them. Such a delight to watch..

Lovely family setting with a nice backdrop!
Light looks a little harsh but you managed well.

Fran
Nice family pose but the hind in the middle has facial characteristics of a Skia hind rather than a fallow doe. The summer coats of these two deer species are very similar and can be easily mistaken. It may be worth checking if the park has Sika.

Anyone else notice the subtle differences?

Thanks for pointing that out Matt, I do know the park does have Sika deer so you could well be right. I am sure Brett Lewis will confirm this should he see the post.....I just assumed without checking..silly me.

As metioned a little harsh light but not something we can control yet! But very endearing family pose, especially the fawn on the left, like it

Hi Fran, great group shot with bags of appeal, light seems harsh but the composition is excellent

Nice work Fran.. For further information and to get an accurate ID on this species it's best to look for the scent glands on the hind legs which you can just about see the white hairs of on the fawn on the RHS. That and the lack of the 'black' tail stripe that is indicative of Fallow.. So Matt was indeed right on his identification. this is in fact a Sika deer family.. (Sorry to be the nerd..!)

Thanks one and all. And particularly Matt and Brett for pointing out my slip up

The title of the image has been changed accordingly.

Fran
I thought I'd gone mad when the title had changed  I wondererd whether I had actually looked at a different title and then clicked on the Fallow .... definately mad!

Thanks Brett for seconding, I did wonder whether to raise it, as I said before the summer coats are very similar but there's some distinctive marks such as scent glands and the balck strip as Brett said. Also there communication - sika are very vocal - squeeking and whistling - very noticable in the rut while fallow are a bit more relaxed.

Lovely picture all the same!
