I live in NC and plan to take a weekend trip to CO in early Sept. to photograph what I consider some of the best scenery in the world. I visited Denver and did the whole tourist thing a few years ago so I'm somewhat familiar with the area. But this time I'll be alone and want to only focus on getting some great shots.
So my question is when (historically) is the best time to come, I was thinking maybe Sept 18-20, and where should I go for some good shots? Thanks in advance.

I think the last week of September and first week of October are usually the best time to catch the Aspens changing in Colorado. As to where to go, well the Maroon Bells is a classic iconic location. McClure Pass and Kebler Pass Road have fantastic stands of Aspens. The Dallas Divide area just west of Ridgway is also a great place for Aspens.

I've had my best luck the last 2 weeks in September and 1st week of October. Te exact timing of "the peak" varies from year to year, but I think its usually around those weeks. The traditional hotspots for fall are Crested Butte, Aspen and the San Juans around Ridgeway.
Thanks Doug & Paul, you've already likely saved me a wasted trip becasue for some reason I was thinking around the middle of Sept but looks like that may just be a little too early. I think I'll shoot for Oct 2-4. Thanks again guys, (long time reader - first time poster).
Doug and Paul pretty much nailed it for you, but here are a couple links that might help. First off, definitely take a look at Darren Kilgore's awesome Fall Drives page. Tons of great info on locations as well as timing. Also, I've put dates on all of my Fall images from the past 7 years. Hope that helps, and good luck!
