Hi All,

Here it is, the 1st. of August, and it's time to start the planning process for NPN's "Nature Appreciation Day"

The 'day' is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2009. Please see NPN Announces Nature Appreciation Day for more information.

It would be really cool to have as many CANP'ers as possible meet up in various locations throughout California to celebrate the day!

To that end, Paul, Lon, and I have identified several different geographical regions in which groups could be formed. The regions are:

1. Sierra East Side
2. Central Valley/Foothills
3. SoCal Mountain/Desert
4. SoCal Coastal
5. NorCal SouthBay
6. NorCal NorthBay

Here's what we'd like to do. We would like to have a person who lives within each region (or who would be in the area) to coordinate plans for the group, and handle any necessary media releases.

So far, Paul and I will handle the Sierra East Side planning, but the other group coordinators have yet to be identified:

1. Sierra East Side: Preston Birdwell, Paul Breitkreuz
2. Central Valley/Foothills; ?
3. SoCal Mountain/Desert: ?
4. SoCal Coastal: ?
5. NorCal SouthBay: ?
6. NorCal NorthBay: ?

If you are interested in acting in the role of group coordinator, please post to this thread, giving the group name and your name.

If you are interested in participating as a group member, please post to this thread, giving the name of the group and your name.

The reason for doing this in this fashion is that, in many cases, CANP members do not have the e-mail addresses of other members, so we need to rely upon the e-mail facility at NPN to send messages.

We would like to identify the coordinators by August 15th. Once the group coordinators have been Identified, I will post a 'summary' topic on the CANP forum.

Each group will make their own plans, including; identifying locations, meet times, format. etc.. For example: Last fall a group of CANPers gathered in Lee Vining for lunch, followed by good talk and look-sees at prints that some of us brought along. After the confab, we wandered off in different directions. It was fairly free-form, everyone had a grand time, and made new friends. So, how each group designs their plans for the day is entirely up to the group. The main thing is to have fun!

If the group coordinators would like to post their plan at CANP, please feel free do so. I will "feature" the topic so that it won't get lost among the other posts. How's that?

So, let's start giving the NPN "Nature Appreciation Day" some serious thought.

If you have questions, or need any clarifications, please post them to this thread.

Many thanks to all for your participation at NPN/CANP!

Living in Santa Cruz, I guess I will be attending the NorCal Southbay expedition. As soon as more replies stream in, I can suggest some locations to consider..

Thanks for putting this together Preston.

Although I haven't settled on my fall plans, I would be happy to help out and participate in either locations (Eastern Sierra or closer to home) depending on where I'll be.

It will be great to see folks and make new friends too.

C'mon folks - anyone want to head up a group outing?

I kinda thought we might all meet up at one location to meet each other, share images, and bullshit for a day like we did last year at the Whoa Nellie Deli. If we go to multiple places at once, there won't be many of us at any one place. The idea sounds cool, but we don't have THAT many folks here.

Jeffrey,

One of the reasons we decided to offer up multiple selections for get-togethers is so folks who are unable to travel far could still meet with others in their area.

Additionally, our full roster, including those who are not very active here, totals nearly 60 folks. Our hope is that the inactive folks who might look in will see the announcement and participate

If things don't work out for groups to meet in places other than Lee Vining, then that's OK, but we felt our effort should be as inclusive as possible.

Thanks fore your input!

Just another reminder that this date will be upon us very shortly. Obviously the intent overall is to try and see how many folks can make an outing on this date, especially if you cannot travel to the eastern Sierras around this period in time.
If there are any seperate gatherings from that area, and even that area too, it is all very informal and should be taken in as a relaxed meeting among fellow shooters.
So, if there are any other plans being made out there, please share your ideas with others who maybe able to meet up even if only for any hour or two on that day. Thank you for at least entertaining the thought. I know the very informal lunch meeting we all had in Lee Vining last year was a very pleasent surprise in the overall number that did turn out. :toast:

Not sure where I will be on that day but a friend discussed wanting to go to Eastern Sierras the week before so if that's the case I'll probably do So Cal Coast.

Prestion & Paul,
Not sure where I'll be on the 4th, but I'll make it to one of the gatherings. The east side would be nice. It was great meeting everyone last year. Best Regards,
Michael

Hey guys, just reading this thread for the first time.

I might be up for a meetup in Lee Vining if the fall color is near peak during that time and the weather looks OK. I'd be especially interested if some of you want to do a group photo outing. I don't have my portfolio printed in a mobile format, so personally the print viewing wouldn't be the highlight for me -- although I'd definitely like to meet everyone.

Matt,

Prints are truly secondary to meeting up and having some fun. So, don't worry if you don't have a 'portable' portfolio.

Last year, some of the group got together after the lunch and wandered off to Bodie, and some went to other spots. It was pretty much a 'spur of the moment' deal, and not at all formal.

Just some added spice for the week end, the moon will be full during this time. Moon rise in the evening, moon set in the morning, and fall color in moon glow. Happy accident or karma?

Thanks for the reminder Paul, I was planning on checking it out - now it's getting exciting. Well, ok, it already was exciting.

Looks like the moon will rise 30min before sunset on Sat the 2nd and exactly at sunset on Sunday. If you haven't seen Stephen Trainor's "The Photographer's Ephemeris" then I highly recommend you check it out.

For example, here's a screen shot set up from Test Station Road. the blue line is the angle of the moonrise. It uses GoogleEarth and you can line up the sun and moon anywhere on the planet. It even can account for elevation! It's cool!

Sunday could be great. The sun will of course set behind the Sierra before actual sunset, so I'm guessing the moon will rise right in to the earth's shadow. Couldn't be any better than that. Also going to post a scene a captured a few years ago from TEst Station road just west of the S.Tufa parking lot. Great vantage point for a sunrise, but a place to catch a moonrise as well.

Anyone up for a sunset at Mono on Sunday ?

Time is getting closer.

Here's that view from the above location.

Lon, that program looks interesting. I'll have to check it out when I get home.

Sounds like a pretty good plan for Sunday. The stars and planets have aligned, literally

I'm up for it. I don't usually do to well with the moon since I try to keep it natural and this is the perfect way to keep it natural.

Anyone camping up there somewhere on Saturday night?
Maybe we can get a group spot?
