Hiker starves in wilderness
Interestingly enough, I came across a flier looking for this guy last fall while driving over Owl Creek Pass heading for Silverjack. A name like Winston Churchill is hard to forget.
Unlike Chris McCandless, seems this guy suffered from mental illness. A lot of idealists seem to be killing themselves lately, was just reading about the artists up in Springs cashing it in. Sad but fascinating story, Todd, thanks for the link.

Todd...thank you for the link...very sad stuff....
I read this story in the paper while in Lake City. First though was "Chris McCandless". Too funny about Sean Penn, LOL. By the way, Stan, McCandless way well have been suffering from severe depression or some sort of mental illness. We will never really know.
Depression kills! And you don't even know how bad off you are. Anyone who thinks they might be suffering from depression can find the symptoms online, and if you have more than one of the symptoms, you need to talk to a counselor immediately! The chemical imbalance caused by depression screws with the decision making part of the frontal lobe and makes you believe there is only one possible answer. I implore anyone struggling with this demon to get help. Please.
I didn't know about this story, but I did know about Chris McCandless. I recently saw the movie about him, and have to say it had a significant impact on me. I found myself envious of the outlook on life Chris had, and his pursuit of simple pleasures. I thought it would be great to have known him, or someone like him. I sure didn't get the impression from the story, that he went to Alaska to die. It must have been lonely for Winston to resort to his final solution. I have always been a worker. You know, not smart enough, or lucky enough to go about it any other way. But I have been willing to work hard, too hard for the things that I thought I needed, or wanted. You can easily loose sight of everything else pursuing the necessecities in life. Before you know it life is passing you by. If it weren't for photography, I might still be blinded by ambition. I still have to work harder than I would like because of choices I made. But I have learned to step away, and make more time for the really important things. Right now that is weekends home with my wife, and hikes in the sierras, and sunsets on the beach.

Tod,
I saw the same fliers for this guy in the same area as well as the Lake City area as you mentioned also last fall.
