My hubby & I are considering a short trip to RMNP in mid- or late- September. I realize RMNP isn't the "hot spot" for fall color like the San Juans or Aspen areas, but are there any areas in the park where I could get some decent fall foliage shots? Any suggestions for dayhikes that would get us to some nice aspen groves/fall color areas would also be appreciated.
How about the Vail area? Depending on how many days we're gone, we could hit that area one day, too.
Thanks for your help.

The Bear Lake area has probably the most photogenic locations for aspen in RMNP, but there are also some aspen groves you can drive or hike to at Upper Beaver Meadows, Bierstadt Moraine (above Bierstadt Lake), Horseshoe Park and the base of Trail Ridge Road near Hidden Valley.
In Vail you will see obvious groves of aspen on the hillsides of each side of Interstate 70. You can use the frontage roads to photograph them with ease.

My personal recommendation if you get an extra day to travel around is to go just 1 hour south west of denver on 285 to Kenosha pass. It has some of the best aspens in Colorado.

Guenella Pass above Georgetown is another option ... less than an hour from Denver. I did take a left on a dirt road just before Kenosha Pass once and was wishing I was there in the fall with all the aspen...so that's a good recommendation. And RMNP will have plenty of photo ops.

RMNP is amazing in Autumn, make 100% sure to hit the Wild Basin area, it is incredible!
