OK. another sticky thread!

Everyone - last year we missed the photo display at the Great Sand Dunes Nation Park and Preserve. However this year we once again have the chance to show our work at Great Sand Dunes. This is a fantastic opportunity to show your work, which will hang in the visitor center from Mid September to Mid May. As in the previous year, depending on the amount of participants, we may need to break this into two showings.

In order to participate you will need to do able to do the following:

- Create a fine print taken in Great Sand Dunes, mount and frame it to a finished size NO larger that 30 inches.
- Deliver your work to Great Sand Dunes at the designed date in mid September (I believe September 19).
- Pick up your work at the designated take-down date.

If there is a volunteer willing to transport images for those folks who are unable to make, please contact me.

If you are willing and able to participate in the showing please respond to this thread.

Makes you wonder why they don't just rename it to the Stan Dunes Display and just show off his stuff!

I'm in. Dunes must be made of sand not Stan...
Posted by Paul Martin on August 8, 2009 at 7:31 PM
I'd also be in, if I can find an image that is worthy......
Posted by Mel Ladewig on August 10, 2009 at 10:30 AM
I'm in with a non-sand image from the park.

Sadly I don't have anything new from the Dunes, but I can at least say it was cool to be part of the last show, and that folks should definitely take advantage of a very cool opportunity. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

I'm in. Please let us know for sure what day we need to drop them off!
Posted by Aleksandra Miesak on August 10, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I'd like to participate if there is still room. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. We will have a submission page up later, today. Due to the time constraints this will probably not be a contest.

I will also confirm the hanging date.

Sounds great Rene, count me in! Im sure ill be headed out that way a few times before Sept 19, so if you need any help let me know.

This was so much fun last time. I'm in again this time, though I may have to hoof it out there once or twice in the next few weeks to increase the collection. The quality of material is a lot higher now - thanks, Stan...

Bump!

Hi all...I would really love to participate, but I have a minor problem. I'm probably going to be in Antarctica in January. So I'd probably be able to take the photo down there but not pick it up, or I wouldn't be able to deliver it in January if I happened to make the second batch. Am I asking too much to want to submit? :) Would anyone one out there who would be going anyway be willing to be my proxy if one of my photos was chosen? I live in the Denver area.

Thanks
Posted by Rene Pirolt on August 21, 2009 at 1:11 AM
Cynthia - I am sure someone will be able to get your work back to Denver. If no one pipes up, I can arrange a safe return for your picture(s).

So far we have some excellent submissions. :toast:

Please keep the park's submission guidelines in mind. This also includes pictures intimate landscapes, macros, wildlife, abstracts, monochromatic / B&Ws, and images from the park other than the dunes.

Keep 'em coming.

Well I'm in from my hiatus. I went a bit traditional based off reviews from images you guys already saw of mine.

Everyone,

from the amount of work submitted so far it appears we may be able to display all work at once, and then hold a second submission for a second show. However, in the unlikely case that we receive a lot of additional submissions we may need to split into two groups. Please be flexible if this occurs. I will give those who submitted early first choice.

The hanging date is Saturday September 19, 2009. It would be preferred if everyone can show up at the visitor center at approximately the same time. I am going to suggest 9:00am. Unfortunately I will NOT be able to come because of prior commitments.

Please use this forum topic to discuss when everyone can meet up at the visitor center, if anyone wants to drive down the day before and incorporate some shooting at the park, or meet up for dinner or breakfast.

I will be out town all of next week without access to email or phone. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will try to answer these when I get back next Sunday, September 12.

Quick question, it says the images have to be framed, what if you're doing a canvas print?
Posted by Stan Rose on September 6, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Jason, I believe you can mount the photos any way you want--the only requirement is that they are ready to be hanged.
Posted by Les Barstow on September 7, 2009 at 11:34 AM
For those who haven't had stuff on display at the Visitor's Center before, the display area hardware is a bit "odd". It's an overgrown peg-board, and the pegs are dowels with rounded ends, somewhat under 1" in diameter. It really is best suited for wire-hung pieces. I believe we managed to jury-rig something for one or two mounted prints, but for your own sanity, I would highly recommend stringing every print with wire, whether it's mounted, canvas, or framed.

If I submitted work on Saturday the 4th how soon should I know if it's accepted?
Thanks
Posted by Les Barstow on September 14, 2009 at 2:19 PM
Looks like it's up! Excellent stuff - I feel more than a bit dwarfed by the quality of many of the other entries...
Posted by Les Barstow on September 15, 2009 at 10:18 AM
Do we have enough room to display the whole set?
Posted by Rene Pirolt on September 15, 2009 at 2:37 PM
Guys - thank you for submitting the wonderful images. Patrick, the park ranger, is excited to have the images in the visitor center.

Stan Rose has generously volunteered to oversee the hanging on Saturday morning, since I cannot go. Please look for him at the Visitor Center. He plans to be there when the visitor center opens. Per the NPS website, the visitor center opens at 9:00 am.

Currently there are 18 images, all of them are fairly large. Unfortunately we cannot hang all of the images, and we need to reduce this to an absolute maximum of 12 images. This will give us 2 images per panel. We could cram all 18 images on the panels, but some of the would hang at floor level and would be subject to feet and little children's hands!

Does anyone want to volunteer to have their image(s) displayed during the second showing in January? If no one volunteers I believe it is fair if we only selected one image per person. You could also bring all of your images, and then decide which 12 to hang.

Please shoot me an email ASAP if you would like one or both of your images displayed during the second show.

Also, if some of you could bring a camera and take a picture of the final display, I would appreciate it.
Posted by Les Barstow on September 15, 2009 at 2:52 PM
I'll be bringing a camera, since I'll be turning the trip into a photo excursion. I'll be sure to put some fresh batteries into the oft-neglected flash unit before heading out...

I'm also okay with displaying only one of my images at this showing; I wouldn't mind some input on which of the two I submitted should hang this time out (image chosen will be at the larger 12x18" print size). If folks want to contribute their opinion of which of the two should be hung, please visit this rating page (pick one only...)
Posted by Jason J. Hatfield on September 15, 2009 at 6:20 PM
I'll do one at each show but since I just found out they were accepted it's too late for me to have a canvas wrap ready by the 19th. Are we able to take it down there another day?
Posted by Rene Pirolt on September 16, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Jason - you probably will not be able to hang your image any later than this weekend. Because of the limited space we will try to make the images fit as best as possible on Saturday. Would you be willing to hang both images in January?
Posted by Rene Pirolt on September 16, 2009 at 7:35 PM
A couple of items regarding this Saturday.

Display Labels
I have created labels for all images - see email. Please review the information on the label and let me know of any corrections need to be made - right away. I would like to have these finalized by tomorrow. The labels will be cut to size, mounted, laminated, and displayed with your image. I have included ALL labels even if your piece is not being displayed until January.

Who lives in the western area of town?
Does someone live in Lakewood, Golden, or even near Evergreen? I need someone to take the labels to the park. If someone is willing to take the labels, please contact me. I will meet you at your convenience.

What pieces are being displayed?
As you know, we have too many images and we need to break the group into two sessions - a September session (this Saturday) and a January session (date to be announced). Joseph Rossbach has kindly volunteered to display both of his images in January. Jason Hatfield will not have his images finished by this weekend and I have asked him to wait and display both in January. This leaves us with 14 pieces. Most likely we will not be able to fit 14 pieces on the display. If you have two pieces, please be prepared to hang only one for this session and your second piece will be displayed in January. However, you may want to bring both pieces. Once everyone has one piece on the display, and there is additional space, the remaining pieces will be hung based priority order list sent in email. The priority is based on the order you entered your image.

Is anyone not going on Saturday?
Please shoot me an email so that I know you will be hanging your piece(s) in the January session.

In case of issues!
I know we won't have any issues, but please keep in mind that we are guests of the National Park Service. They are doing us a tremendous favor and giving us great exposure by allowing us to display our work at a National Park. Needles to say the NPS has the final word on everything! Stan Rose will be coordinating the display and will be there for a short time in the morning. Please look for him. If there is anything urgent, please contact me!

Thank you again everyone for making this a fantastic display.

Please take pictures and post these in the forum.

We put up the photos at the Visitor Center this morning. They look great.

I would like to thank Rene for all his hard work. :wavey:

As Momo indicated, Rene deserves a big thank you for the hard work, and also thanks to Stan for coordinating everything with the NPS -- thanks guys! It was great to meet a few members who I hadn't met, and the display looks really great.
