Ruby-throated Hummingbird in New Mexico?
I took this photo yesterday at the Bosque de Apache in central New Mexico. In comparing it with bird books I think it is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird which is not common in this state. It wouldn't be the weirdest thing I've ever seen but wanted your opinion. I think it is a Ruby-throat due to the shape of the bird which is similar to the Black-chinned Hummingbird that is common in this state. That's another possibility: could it be a black-chinned with a red gorget? It doesn't look like the right shape for a broad-tailed hummingbird which would be the more common one here with a red gorget. Thanks for any help.

I'd go with Broad-tailed, the expected "red throated" hummer in New Mexico. The color here is a bit brassy, just like I see on the Broad-tails in AZ. To me Ruby-throated is a deeper color.

It isn't an Anna's - the color doesn't cover the crown and the gorget doesn't flare out at the bottom corners.

Compare the photos of all three species in Sheri Williamson's Hummingbirds of North America.

Thanks Richard. I think you are right. I needed a good male Broad-tail image so now I have one.
