Herard or Bust! + bonus pano
Gotta take advantage of those rare summer days without thunderstorms...
I really didnt care that the midday light and cloudless skies werent optimal for photography, i just had to stand on top of Herard aka Mount Seven and see the Dunes from a mile above. The only other photos ive seen of the Dunes from Herard are by Jack B, and while i didnt share his nice morning light it was still a fabulous trip! I needed the exercize badly, so w/o 4WD i made it a 15+ mile 5,000 foot daytrip from the forest boundary on the east side. Only two other cars were at the trailhead, despite the perfect weather. Here's the Dunes...

Nice trip report Stan! You've captured the dunes from almost every angle now. I love the view on that first shot, seeing the Blanca massif in the distance is nice too with or without midday light. Thanks for posting this!

I backpacked to Medano Lake a few years ago (still shooting 4x5) with the intention of making it up to Herard's summit. Needless to say, the backpack in, and all the snow we had to negotiate through in mid-June, wore me out too much to make it up past the lake. That you did it doesn't surprise me one bit! Great photos, Stan Dune!

What a great perspective on that first shot. Sounds like an exhausting, but fun way to spend a gorgeous day!

Those are some sweet images for midday light. I really like the 1st one. Congrats on a successful excursion.

Thanks! I made some minor revisions to it to try to counteract some of the effects of the haze/smoke. I always wondered if CS4 could handle a photomerge of handheld shots, so i tried it out with these 4 shots from Herard, didnt too badly considering.
