Thought I'd get one of these in before they all get filled with lead The light yesterday morning was stunning and it was good to meet Chris Lloyd and Jack Chapman on the tops. The heather should be approaching its best over the next week (still a bit patchy in places). This fella did me a favour and found a nice clump to haul out onto to show his legs.
I like this a lot Simon, the heather compliments it well and it is good to see the 'white boots' too. Hope its all out for next week then and some are left for us
cheers
Steve

Again this one shows no concern, don't they know the date?. Great comp, pose and colours. Excellent.

It is a great image, somehow the crop's not quite working for me.A tadge off the left and bottom with a more of a letterbox feel would float my boat.Beautifully processed and a clever capture too.
Thanks for the comments all. I toyed with the composition for a while Mark but wanted to include the full 'lump' and some of the foreground heather. However, this crop brings the bird closer to the more usual thirds lines. WDYT?

Simon I prefer the original because of the amount of heather in the foreground. With the repost you only get the tips around the 'mound' and has more depth for me

Simon,
Cracking shot. Hope I didn't scare that grouse off you were photographing!
I do like the new crop but also agree with Steve about the depth issue, the only other way I could see of improving the feel, would be to try and get the birds eye as near to a thirds point as possible, which would mean more to the top and less on the left on you original post.
Ether way its a nice shot and you did well to find a nice patch of heather with an obliging grouse, the heather on the moors is a bit more sporadic just now, be better next week, but there are more grouse up there this year than the dales area.
Thanks for the feedback Danielle. I venture across the moors most days crossing between the various dales and I actually think there are more Grouse this year than last. However, many seemed to be late nesting this year and I think this is because the heather was still being burnt into late April and May which probably delayed breeding. As such there are still a lot of immature birds around and many are still in their family groups. These may not be included in any count so I wonder if some of the shoots will be delayed.
