This hoverfly was preening itself after feeding on a yellow flower head, Golden Rod I think. It was obviously quite engrossed in what it was doing and let me get in nice and close. It is normally very difficult to get a hoverfly's head and mouthparts in focus as the mouth parts are rarely within the plane of focus when DOF is so shallow. Here I was able to get slightly below the hoverfly which allowed me to get a good angle.

Shots of this nature don't work too well at 720 pixels so here's a 1000 pixel version.

quite amazing really Matt.. love the vibrant colours and the eye detail is really something. Excellent work . If I had to critique something very minor indeed it would be the darker area to the RHS but it really doesn't bother me that much as I'm so mesmerized by the eyes anyway..

Outstanding detail as demonstrated by the larger version. The 720 compression does not do the photo justice.

The detail in the eyes is just stunning and at 1000px it's scary beautiful tones of colour thoughout the image and I like the composition, very nice work Matt
