Nicely captured. Lovely colours and background. Looks a better specimen than my dowdy pair

After keep going back and forth between my shot and Maggie's as well as trawling my ID guides I'm a little confused over the actual ID of this one but since it has 2 white dots in the eye I think this might be a Small heath as well.. Anyone got any real idea..?
Nice one Brett... I believe this is a Meadow Brown (female), AFAIK the Small Heath only has a single white spot int eh 'eye' whereas the Meadow Brown often has a smaller second spot.

Thanks Guys.. Thanks Phil, I also had it confirmed by UK Butterflies experts and they too said it was a MB.. My ID isn't so bad after all..

Lovely image, but I think you will find this is a GateKeeper Butterfly, it has 2 eye dots on each patch as yours and the wings although closed have more orange on the upper wing than a meadow brown.

Sorry Peter but have had it confirmed with the experts at Butterfly conservation and they tell me that it is most definitely a Meadow brown. The number of spots is variable according to them and this butterfly was bigger than the Gatekeepers that were around at the same time. Gatekeepers also have apparent ocelli in their underwing of the hind wings which is not present in the Meadow brown.. Thanks anyway.
