NPN Nature Appreciation Day

Sierra East Side Group

Here's the Plan...

When: Sunday, October 4, 2009. Time: 11:00 AM -- 1:00PM
Where: The Silver Lake Picnic Area located on the June Lake Loop road. (Driving directions will be posted later)

Bring your own lunch and libation. You are encouraged to bring prints: We had great success with this last year.

Preston will bring some firewood if the weather is chilly. If you want to cook your food there, you'll be responsible to bring your own stove, fuel, etc.

Bad Weather Backup: If the weather is truly bad, we will meet at the Mobile Station (Whoa Nellie Deli) at the intersection of Hwy 395 and 120 (Lee Vining).

Truly bad weather will be conditions that would cause beer to freeze and/or necessitate the use of skis or hip waders.

If you have questions, please post them as replies to this thread. Thanks.

We are looking forward to seeing you on the East Side!

Look forward to seeing all those that can attend. A slight addition to Preston's message would be: Anyone who attends might be subjected to a group photo or two also.

Sounds interesting, be nice to put a face with the great photography. I guess I can't escape CANP.

Sounds like a great plan Preston. I hope to make it over there for that weekend, but not 100% sure yet.

Anyone else planning on being on the east side that weekend?

I posted in the other thread but I wanted to mention here as well that I'm interested.

I'm in!!! Looking foward to seeing any that make it up there and I hope to get a chance to meet any of you that I haven't met.

There will definitely be fall color up there somewhere even if it is not during the fluxuated peak.

Steve

Just a side bit of info. Not sure if everyone is reading this post up here I am so used to skipping info up at the top of thread listing so I never saw this until someone mentioned it was up there.

I am planning on being there. I have a show on Oct 1st and 2nd, but have Oct 5th as well, so expect me on Oct 3 - 5 in the eastern sierra. Hope to see you all at Silver Lake.

Hi,

I just joined the network this morning. I would like to meet up with you all at June Lake. The time you suggested from 11:00 to 1:00 is rather short. I am fairly new to digital photography and was hopping to tag along with one or more good photographers to pick up some tips.

Also, I have a travel trailer and would like to camp in the area for a few days. Does anyone have a suggested campground?

Thanks

Roland :wavey:

Roland,

The time frame given is for folks to meet, visit, eat, and look at the prints of those who bring them.

Last year, several of us met in the morning, did some shooting, and then went to the lunch gig. After lunch, some folks got together and wandered off. Others went out on their own.

The whole thing was pretty informal; and this year it will be very similar. So, if you show up at the 'brunch/lunch gig, I am pretty sure you'll be able to find someone to tag along with.

We'll see you there!

There are a few campgrounds in Lee Vining Canyon, off of Hwy 120.

Preston,
Great plan. Hope I can make it. I'm still trying to figure out my work schedule. Best Regards.

I'm hoping to make it as well seeing as I didn't make it up last season. It will be here before you know it!
If any of you are looking to do a hike in the area I'd recommend Fern Lake. It's got some great scenery and the lower, easiest part of the trail goes through some nice aspens. However it is an a$$ kicker if you're not in shape. Heck, it's still an a$$ kicker if you are in shape! Beautiful scenery though at the lake and located just east at the bottom of Carson peak.

I hope to make it up there as well. At this point I'm at the mercy of the bossman, but if I can get some days off I will try to meet up.

Just some added spice for the week end, the moon will be full during this time. Moon rise in the evening, moonset in the morning, and fall color in moonglow. Happy accident or karma?

Hmm, that means I will have to squeeze in another day trip.

I'm in! I am likely going to drive up from the LA area Saturday night, and shoot at Mono Lake Sunday morning. If anyone is interested in carpooling, send me an e-mail.

OK I'm in. I'm planning on coming up on Friday, and hopefully do a little shooting Friday afternoon as well. Are there still motels with room available? Or should I plan on camping?

Posted by Steve Sieren on September 17, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Might be hard to find one Matt. If anyone is camping I have an extra 20 degree bag I won't be using.

Got good news from the boss man so I will be able to go up after all. Gonna try to leave Wed night and hit South Tahoe, Lundy, and McGee creek on my way down 395. I hope to get Bishop Creek by Saturday sometime. Hopefully there is camping in those areas, but if not I can sleep in the car. Looking forward to meeting everyone on Sunday.

Yeah, I'm going try and be there. And I normally camp or sleep in my car when shooting Fall colors. So hopefully there will be some decent spots for that over there.

I just called Four Jeffrey and the women there said she manages several of the campgrounds and they plan on having some camp sites available.

I haven't called the June Lake area yet.

I would love to attend and meet you guys, but unfortunately, I'm booked that weekend. I have the great priviledge of introducing a couple of newbies to Sierra Backpacking so I'll be somewhere above Bishop with them at the time.
