Is there a type of external hard drive that can connect directly to the camera without the use of a computer for those times when you need the space but not the computer. Thanks

I think Epson still sells the "P" series multimedia drives....but they are expensive. You can download and view your files on a 4 or 5 inch screen. The P7000 sells for about $700 on Amazon. I'm sure there are cheaper solutions but I had the P4000 for a while and really liked it.

I like the Epson drives, I had the P2000 and now have the P7000. The advantage over an external drive is you can see the photos, on a big very high resolution screen to verify the files have copied correctly. A few years ago on a trip to Iceland my brother had another device that didn't allow viewing and he downloaded a card , it recorded the files, but later when we copied them to my computer all the files were corrupted. I like the assurance of seeing them and also to be able to look through and zoom in on the images. I use it sometimes to do the initial edits/cuts before I copy to a computer. You can also hook the device up to a TV to view the images.

There is also the hyperdrive series of devices for on the road backup.

I have a Hyperdrive Space drive, it has worked fine for me on the few occasions I've needed to backup without a PC. You can not view the images like you can with the Epsons, but it does have 2 different verification options, it will compare the data on the drive to the memory card and give you a report.

I believe the new hyperdrive colorSpace device does have a small review screen.

A review can be found here.

You can also buy hard drives which don't have a color LCD display but do still have memory card slots. They are much cheaper than Epson. Mine is branded Wolverine and it works fine. I couldn't live without it when on the road.

Kathryn, You might want to consider that P2000 of Joe's...it's a 20gb drive with a pretty nice viewer. Depending on the condition, It could be a good buy.

Hi Kathryn,

I've also been using the Epson P-2000 since 2005. I've never had a problem with it. It's very nice to be able to view your shots from the viewer screen. It's been a great portable device.
