Black & Yellow Garden Spider - Argiope aurantia (male on left). Found about 200 yards apart in open field on our property on 8/17/09.
I was drawn to the bright colors of the female, apparently preparing what looks to be a dragonfly. The male was discovered 10 minutes later, preparing a grasshopper. I tried to match the skyline for a side-by-side comparison. Identification was via www.bugguide.net. Photos were cropped ~50% to show relative sizes.
Comments welcome.
