Bad time to have just bought a 40D  Looks really good, though not sure on the whole video mode that seems to be the new thing on dslr's.

DSLR wars between Canon and Nikon, its comedy.

7D does look pretty good though, undercutting the D700 for price too.. Entertaining how all this new technology makes pretty much no difference to the end result though, people still post fantastic shots on the original 5D, and 1D MkII's

Not read-up about it in detail yet, but first impressions look promising (as long as it works properly  )

I wonder if it will auto focus at f8.

Note that the 7D has an APS-C sensor, unlike the D700 or 5D etc.

First reports from beta testers are of similar picture quality to the 50D, just more pixels, so I wouldn't worry if you have just bought a 40D, it takes some beating.

Call me old fashioned but shouldn't the actual content of an image be more important than the quality and the equipment used to get it. Don't get me wrong, I love to see high quality pictures but I suspect that the vast majority of images will never be seen larger than A4 and there are dozens of cameras out there that can produce super quality images at that size and even much larger images with interpolation. Even Tim's statement mentions high end cameras when in reality there are enthusiasts out there with old and basic models taking excellent and imaginative pictures. As for video, 'BECAUSE WE CAN' is, I suspect, the overiding factor in putting video into a stills camera. What a waste of time. Pure gimmickry which just adds to the plethora of buttons and menus on modern cameras and of course a nice hike in price. If I want to be a film-maker I'll buy a proper bloody video camera. Rant over.
PS I'm looking forward to Canon putiing a mobile phone in my DSLR so I can immediately phone home to tell the wife about the photograph of the Pembrokeshire Panther I just missed because I was faffing about trying to get the video mode to operate !!!!

dont know whats going on , on dpreview. but there seems to be alot of in-fighting on the canon forum over the 7D, dont know why.. crazy.. it seems like a nice camera. i think they need to get out and take photos, even the nikon crowd are saying it looks like a good camera.

Robert - I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at this one! I have 2 Canons - A Powershot S2IS 5 MP and a Canon Rebel XSi/450D. I like them both as there are shots I can get with one that I can't get with the other. But a mobile phone - that might be a nice add on. Might mean more buttons, but hey I am still figuring out features on my Canons, so why not add the phone in there too! lol!
One rant about Video tho: Need a high gig card if a person wants to shoot both pics and videos. I have used the video features on the Powershot - and 2G cards are not enough for both. Rant over, but I had to comment on the phone on the DSLR - still laughing hysterically! Thanks Robert, I needed that!
