So, is this an upgrade for the 50d? It doesn't seem to be one for the 5d mkII. It doesn't have a full size sensor, but does have a full size viewfinder. Which I wish I had on my 5d.

Yup, 50D upgrade. The dual Digic-4 processors sound intriguing, as do several other items. Boy, if this is an APS-C sensor that has good noise performance at 18mp, that's impressive. A big "if," but worth investigating. Not being full-frame probably means I won't own one, but these technological advances only make future releases that much better.

I find this to be a very interesting introduction into their lineup. Does this mean their won't be a 60D? If it had a FF sensor, then I would get excited. If this is replacing the 10D-50D era, then I can see this body making more sense.

I think this is meant to be an "enthusiast" sports camera -- like a mini 1DIII but with a 1.6x crop factor and fewer AF points. If this camera were FF, then I would also be more excited -- but I know I couldn't go back after using a FF camera for the last 2 years. This does bode very well for the next affordable FF, though. With these features it will be a knockout.

I think it sounds like a pretty sweet camera. I really like the 8 FPS - excellent for adventure photography.

Well it will offer us all more choices at least. Wonder what the noise performance is like with smaller sensor pixels? I like the addition of a level, and am not sure I need all the video stuff.

I think the 7D is really a new camera in the lineup. It competes head to head with the now "old" Nikon D300. It's definitely a sports camera first, but from the looks of it a damn nice one. A lot of the features on this camera should have been in the 5DII, but alas it's was not meant to be.

I have my doubts much of the important upgrades will be in the next 5D upgrade either, Canon always wants to protect it's 1D series. But with kids growing up (i.e. sports, etc), portraits (built in flash commander) and stitching for landscapes, I don't think I need full frame anyway; this 7D is much more "bang for my buck".

Just need to wait for noise tests to see if all those pixels are too much for the 1.6x sensor.

Craig, I agree with so much of what you said. And quite frankly, if the noise performance outshines my 5D Classic, then it's game on -- maybe. So, what are the killer EF-S mount ultrawides these days? Or should I just sell a bunch of crack or go pimp out my hot bod to some rich cougar and go buy the Nikon 14-24?

The Canon 10-22 is the 17-40L in EF-S format and as far as I've seen its the top of the pack in crop ultrawides for all around balance. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two on their respective formats. The overall look is very similar in both strengths and weaknesses. The f2.8 Tokina crop ultrawide looks to be solid competition, but has much more limited zoom range.

And I have to say that since I bought an EOS3 last year, I can completely understand where people are coming from with a demand for an EOS 3D. It is simply a fantastic camera.

I have to say that I'm disappointed with both Canon and Nikon in the full frame segment. With Canon, I have to wonder why the keep the 1D in the lineup at 1.3X, why the don't make a 1D body without the built in vertical grip like EOS 1V, why they continue to keep features out of the 5D. The EOS3 gave 45point AF, weather seals, a great viewfinder, a solid shutter in a body just over 1K. It added the new ETTL2 support before the 1V came out. It had eye control focus that wasn't even available in the 1 series (although I can never get eye control to work for me). Some of these things should have been no brainers for Canon. Instead the 5D is like an Elan 7N with an expensive sensor. And Nikon is in pretty much the same boat.

Te he he... well wife just figured out I've had a 50D since last October shooting the bloons this morning. I handed her the 20D to use and she asked the obvious question. She has used the 50D. Hmm wonder if she'll notince the diference with a 7D.... naw!
