will be in Vegas early October, I'm wondering if any of you know of some good landscape spots within an hour, or two, drive ?

Valley of Fire has lots of natural arches and is close. Death Valley and Zion are farther but worth a visit if you have time.

I wouldn't miss Valley of Fire State Park. Some of the prettiest sandstone I've seen anywhere. Lots of intimate sandstone scenes as well as some pretty sweet grand vistas. Super nice campground, too.

However, if you're feeling adventurous, have a 4WD and can camp on this trip, then I highly recommend visiting a BLM site called 'Little Finland' off I-15 near the Utah border, which is about an hour (and a world) away from Las Vegas.
This area is a unique sandstone wonderland, and is rarely photographed (so far).
Check out this detailed travelogue (in German) for lots more info. The author also has a gallery of images from there.
You can find two more pages of images from Little Finland here.
Definitely not a day trip from the city, but a possibility when arriving or departing.

Red Rocks area just on the outskirts of town. Also, we can't forget Area 51?
Check out Nevadawilderness.org and you'll get more ideas than you could cover all year. I wish I had an excuse to go out there! Wee Thump wilderness looks amazing if you're into Joshua Trees. This could give you a lot of ideas too.

Ken, mentioned Red Rocks and I was there this spring It is really close, less than a 30 minute drive. It is a great place with lots of possibility. The operating hours are not good for sunrise/sunsets. They did have a special night tour that might work for star shots. Here is a link.

How in the hell do the Germans always find cool stuff like Little Finland before anyone else?! I've GOT to check that out. Thanks, John!

Bret, you know I always thought that too. I have always followed there site, and how I found out alot of places without asking people. (Because some folks do not like to give any info out. Just translating the language from german-english was difficult at first, but once I got that down, I just marked up my typo maps/Utah/Arizona gazetteer. Now each time I go, I have locations that I will try to hit up. I found alot of cool new places to go for my upcoming trip in March back out there. I cannot wait, been 2 years since I have been back. :(
