The Afterglow
I had a great time meeting up and shooting with Steve Sieren and Floris van Breugel the other day at Laguna Beach. This image isn’t from that outing… because they decided to bring clear blue skies and high tides with them. This was actually shot a couple of days before.

I originally processed this image a bit brighter, but the more I looked at it the more interesting it became as the basic shapes were allowed to fall to black. I’d be curious to hear if that’s the case for others. I particularly liked the natural vignette on the bottom as the water receded, minimizing the reflection around this bowl of sand.

Interestingly, that sliver of reflection in the URC is the reflection off some guy’s skimboard standing up on the sand. He was running up and down the sand all the while I was shooting this sunset. I wonder if he stopped to enjoy the sunset too, or if he was just waiting for another good wave(?). In retrospect, I wish I would have noticed him during the shot and swung the camera just a little more to the right. I was too focused on the water paterns.

As always, any comments, suggestions or critiques are always welcomed.

Cheers!

Of the many great sunsets that I've seen, this is one of my favorites.

Eric,

this is beautiful and somewhat unique. The layout of the rocks and the creation of the "drain" make for a wonderful composition. The color throughout is beautiful and the darkness of the vignett and overall presentation works very well.

I'd say the reflection of the mini surf board is slightly distracting, but minor.

Eric, this wall of rocks makes for a wonderful formation to the left along with the returning wave action and sand draw. The sunset skyline is super. I might clone the glare off the board that Lon mentions, otherwise, really nice work.

Eric,

I like the lines in the FG and the curving nature of the beach. Just clone out tht reflection if it bothers you, or make a small crop.

The foreground vortex is just awesome Eric, wonderful bowl shape and great leading lines. I would get rid of that reflection one way or another, otherwise very nice! Great shooting with ya

Natural vignettes like this don't come by often, it makes the comp. The shot is just I saw in your lcd. The palm tree looks like an anchor way up at the top which is unusual but works great. That reflection looks like a shootin star? It was nice meeting you Eric.

I agree with Lon, this image is unique. What can I say except that everything works well together. Great composition.

I just love that foreground swirl. Together with the light and the deep shadows, I am really liking this.
