This little worm reminded me of the old "Nessie" photo of Loch Ness fame. He posed in this position long enough for me to take 17 narrow DoF photos which I processed using Helicon Focus. Shooting at f4 gave the nice blur of the background. This is probably a cankerworm but could be a looper.

Ugly, but sweet. Nicely captured. Not sure who had more patience.
I thought monster photos were to be poorly focused, nevertheless looks like the blend worked well.

excellent job with the DOF! I've got to get on board with the helicon focus software, because it seems to work very well in situations like this where macro DOF is a challenge to say the least. Well executed, and I agree, it is the result of a lot of patience both in the field and in the digital darkroom.

Nice shot. How did you train him to remain still for the 17 photos? I have trouble getting my bugs to cooperate.
I'm impressed that you even tried this, Ken. I doubt I would have (and I have HF and use it with some regularity). 17 exposures with a (potentially) moving object...wow. Heck, even the coneflower is a potentially moving object. You must have had no wind in addition to a cooperative worm!
