Recently sent in my 1Ds Mark II body for cleaning and adjustment. I wrote on the repair order to be sure and check the shutter actuations but when I got it back that info was nowhere to be found. I thought they would check actuations as a matter of routine to see if it needs replacing? I have sent two emails to the repair center but no response.

Might be worth a call.

I read someplace that only the Canon service center can get a true actuation count? This isn`t true?

Canon uses software to do it. So does the guy who developed his own software. I don't know how reliable this guy's software is compared with Canon's, but I'm told by other "1" series photogs that it's been accurate. Haven't used it myself.

Unfortunately, I have heard little "good" about Canon repair service and my own personal experiences suggest you won't get a reply from them. Last time I sent a lens for repair all they did was send it back with a sheet on "how to hold your camera steady". The lens is still fouled up and I changed what brand camera I shoot.

I would like to refer everyone to a thread on LL on this subject. This guy loaned out his camera to a friend for two days, which had 30,000 shutter count, but when he got it back it had over 200,000 actuations.

Guy and Gal's (especially Liz),
I've been shooting Canon for years and I've had perfect service. Not one time have I even been disappointed. I've always pickup the phone when I had a question about equipment that I have in service. I can't say how they are when it comes to answering emails. I'd recommend that you pick up that phone and dial the number and just ask. I also wouldn't hang up until I had an answer. Again, I've never had an issue with Canon service and that's over a 20 year time frame.
Just for example, I dropped my 5D with my TS-E 24mm mounted and broke the base on the lens. I wrote them a note about my accident and how I was not claiming a warranty issue. They repaired the lens and shipped it out to me without charge. They repaired it free and they did it in less that 4 days. I also dropped my G-9 with the lens extended. Yes, it broke the lens! BTW, these are the only two cameras that I've ever dropped so I don't make it a habit! I FedExed it in, they fixed it the day the received it and shipped it back out that same day and I received it the next! It cost me $168.00 but it took 2-days! I say, now that is service!

I haven't had any experiences as extreme as Jerry's, but I've had pieces of gear into Canon three times in the last five years with excellent experiences each time. The first two were before I became a Canon Professional Services member, the last one after I was a member. Total satisfaction each time.

I just got off the phone with Canon and they did not check the actuations. I thought this would be a matter of routine otherwise how do they know when it is time to replace the shutter? Anyway, they are going to pay for round trip shipping so they can check the actuations for me-pretty nice treatment.

I'm glad you guys have had good service. Hopefully my experience was the exception but I rely on my cameras too much to risk such an experience again.

Mike, it's my understanding they don't automatically replace a shutter unless it's worn out and no longer operational. They may surely replace it if you ask specifically, but I wouldn't guess that checking actuations is a routine thing. And yes, definitely nice treatment from Canon. Are you a CPS member?
Liz, other pros I know have some similar horror stories from Nikon service, too. No doubt there's always a bad apple waiting to float to the surface regardless of which brand camera/lens system one owns. Just unfortunate that it floated to the surface at the moment you were bobbing for apples.

Oh I'm sure every brand has its horror stories. The sheer audacity to suggest I don't even know how to hold a camera was what set me off. I know the difference in a holding mistake and a lens not being calibrated properly to a camera body.
Just on a side note...I don't shoot Nikon either actually. I use Pentax. I had used Pentax for a very long time before digital and only went to Canon because Pentax didn't have a viable digital offering at the time. Now that they have a decent body I'm thrilled to be able to use their glass again. So far so good on service and such. They have a pro program as well that works really well for me.
