Waterproof it!

Gearing up for Fall trip, and one the things I keep thinking of doing is waterproofing stuff. My hiking boots are quite old, but have some REI brand stuff called Ultra Seal that seems to work fairly good, at least for those moist grass mornings and such that you can find in the Fall. Anyone else have suggestions for that?

Mainly though, I'd like to re-waterproof a couple rain jackets, one a lightweight Marmot Precip, and my older, heavier duty North Face (think it is a Mountain Light, had it for 10 years). What have you all used to do that, and what did you think of the results?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Brent,
I've used SNO-SEAL on my boots for years. It comes from Atsko.com. Check their website. They have other sealers as well. SNO-SEAL is a bee's wax product and really works well.

Brent, I actually just went to REI the other day and asked for something to re-waterproof a couple of old rainjackets. They sold me a Nikwax product called Tx. Direct. It comes in a non-aerosol spray and was easy to apply. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to see how well it works.

I use still use Sno-seal for boots, also. It's a wax-like product that's been around forever and has worked for me.

While I was at it I also picked up a Nikwax down detergent at REI and washed my sleeping bag and vest. I'm ready.

Darren is on to something. To think I actually have to put on socks when I haven't for two months is weird enough. Thinking of boots and waterproofing is so not beachy. Uggh. Oh, yeah, I do want to get away from so cal!

I recommend the spray on version of Nikwax Tx Direct for the jacket. Smells a little funny for the first wear, but it works well. For the boots, Nikwax makes some waterproofing stuff for suede, which I've used and been happy with (my new boots are a suede finish). For traditional leather like Vasque Sundowners, I've always liked sno-seal.
