A day spent with Brett Lewis, finding several examples of each of the four common species of reptile - brilliant.
My thanks to Brett for acting as a decoy while I photographed this little beauty – 20 cm of very grumpy baby adder.
Nikon D3 with Sigma 150/F2.8 macro. 1/400 sec @ F14, ISO 400, -0.7 EV. FF.

another very nice adder image. A slight shame about the deep shadows but otherwise a lovely shot.

Perhaps a bit too central Mike but it's a nice pose and the BG is great too

You're right, she was a very grumpy contender but then they always are at this age. It was really nice to be able to add a couple of new animals to my study site and she is one of the first 'new born' adders recorded here so it was a pleasure to share the opportunity. As for the image, really nice pose and good detail around the eye. Have you done something with the BG or is it something to do with movement that has caused the funny lines over the coils on the LHS..? You could lift the shadows a little but it was harsh light again and so you did very well in the circumstances. I might consider taking some reflectors for future use Nice to spend time in the field with you and look forward to next time around.
Nits covered.... Its amazing how Brett just seems to find these things....
Reflectors when the light is harsh would be a good idea.

I haven't done anything to the bg apart from remove all the dust bunnies. Stopping down to F14 doesn't half show them up.
Reflectors - good idea, but at this rate I will need a 3 ton truck to carry all my gear. I'll have to think of something very light that folds down small. There's a lot to be said for studio photography.

Nice snake .Nits covered . No lines on my monitor.Nice catchlight too .
A really nice shot, you did well here, very natural.
Reflectors can be a real pain to set up on non static subjects, you might be better off opting for balancing a flash, and firing it using a long lead, using a pole with a ball and socket on it.
