A man "made" plague.
Well i've managed to get out for the first time since our son was born about 4 weeks ago. I decided to visit one of the spots near me in the hope of finding young common lizards, but what greeted me was a scene from a bunny horror movie.

The place was strewn with dead rabbits, as i rounded the courner to the little car park i spied a myxie infected rabbit sat in the open and not taking any notice of my car. In the grass and in the small copse laid maybe 20 rabbits in various states of decomposition. Amungst the dead about another 6-7 infected rabbits shuffling about. I really wish i carry a priest for times like this. The suffering these animals have to put up with is truely horrific.

Needless to say after taking a few pictures of the rabbits, i lost my desire to look for lizards and went home. Shame as it was a nice day...

A poignant image of one of the consequences of mankind's love-hate relationship with Nature. Thanks for showing.

I know the feeling all too well ... you go out with great intentions and nature's worst shows itself. It's undoubtedly the flip side of nature to what appeals to us all - for all those stunning scenes, beautiful waterfalls, Ospreys plucking trout .... there's the suffering. It dsoesn't make it any easier to accept. It's even harder when you want to help - either seeking vetinary help or putting the animal down but for to the circumstances being unable.

Images such as this obviously demonstrate the suffering. If I'm right Myxi was introduced to reduce rabbit numbers .... that makes scenes like this harder to accept.

Better luck with the lizzards another day!

Its so tragic to see an animal suffering when it can do nothing to help itself. A couple of months ago I came home from work to find a young hedgehog covered in flys and the poor little thing was squeaking like it was crying. I had to drive 8-9 miles to the nearest vets to have it put to sleep. I don't know whether a neighbour had put slug pellets down but it was very distressing to find it like that. I can understand how this ruined your day.

I remember encountering the same scene myself last year Paul, and went home with exactly the same feelings as you as well. I couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time. I took images too, but ended up deleting them because I found them too distressing to keep. But then I am an old softie!!

Better luck with the lizards next time.
