All,
I am planning on going up to RNMP on Sunday and was wondering how the Elk Rut is progressing. Any areas that have more action than others?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim, When Bill and I were up there last weekend most of the action early morning was in Moraine Park, and nothing in Horseshoe Meadows. We found the Elk along the road that parallels the campground and goes to Cub Lake TH, there were quite a few males, and they were bugling.

I was up there again this week and there were more elk visible in Moraine Park and still none in the morning in Horseshoe Park. They have definitely started rutting however. Just seems many less elk than usual, or maybe they are a little later this year.

If they are staying up higher, maybe the cool, damp weather tomorrow will motivate them to come down to the meadows.
Should be interesting sunrise Sunday... That is, if the clouds break.

I've been in the park three nights this week. Things are heating up. Last night there were decent numbers in Morraine, the activity was polite and a little subdued. Horseshoe was the opposite. Two very large bulls were quite worked up, vocal and busy chasing off satellite bulls. By sunset there was a growing chorus of bugling across the valley from unseen bulls. There is still a large group at Forest Canyon overlook, so they're still pretty scattered. This weekend should be very good.

Looks like it might be picking up as the week has gone by. I appreciate the feedback and will check out those areas. One location that I am not familiar with is Fores Canyon overlook. Where is that located?

It is one of the overlooks along Trail Ridge Road, if going from Estes Park to Grand Lake, it is on the left after you get above treeline.
