Just my lack of experience with it I'm sure but when I open pics, if it is a pale bird such as a yellow wagtail but correctly exposed, as LR opens it, I get "Loading Preview, that's ok but then when it is "Rendering Preview" it suddenly pops about two thirds of a stop over exposed from original correctly exposed pic and which, before getting to the "Rendering Preview" bit looked spot on. The odd thing is, when it opens a dark bird such as a coot it pops it slightly darker, about one third of a stop. I use a Nikon D3, the pix are bang on exposure.

Although I have looked around preferences I can't find anything that might prevent this happening and it didn't happen with Nikon Capture, a programme I didn't like much.

Colin:
You need to set your import preset for the D3. After you do so, the preview images should look similar to the "Rendering Preview".
Here is a link to one place where you can download the preset and instructions for how to load them into LR can be found in the thread. There are other places to obtain the presets. This is just an example.
