Hi,
I have a D3 as well, I got the D300s to give me more reach for my wildlife photography, it gives me a whole set of new lenses effectively.
In comparison with the D3 it requires discipline, as it's significantly less forgiving, high ISO shots are out as well as underexposure, it does have a lot of latitude on overexposure I think it has more than the D3. So it's back to the ETTR technique.
I think the AF is extremely good, also the onboard flash with built in diffuser should not be underestimated. So I'm becoming happy with my purchase after initial anxiety.

Difficult shot, but you did a great job. Beautiful image with lovely colours and a nice background.
Enjoy your new purchase.

that is very impressive Tim, lovely and sharp and a very nice background too.
I've yet to have a go at these this year. Out of curiosity, did you use AF on this one? I can never decide which to use and have a found a similar success rate with each.

Hi Matt, is there anything other than AF , actually I tend to aid my AF with manual focusing, been thinking I should send my 300mm in for servicing as focus ring feels a little stiff.
Thats as good as I have seen.... not managed any at all this year, I think the wind has blown them all over to Essex again.
This is super sharp with a great bg....

Absolutely great. I have been trying all summer and not really come close. I would not have noticed the flash if you had'nt mentioned it.
Excellent work

A tiny bit more space on the LHS would make this perfect, IMHO.

Seems to have gone down well, thanks for all comments. I shall enter it into the club macro competition (what a vague subject), I shall first tweek it as David T suggests and get more room on the left and lose a little on the right.
Thanks again

Hello Tim.
Just excellent theres not much else you can say.
Agree with some more room on the left but I would not remove any from the right its fine as is.
The only other thing I might try is just a very small s in the curves ( PS ) as I am finding just a little flat in colour.
Hope you dont mind have had a small go to see what you think.

Hi Guy,
Thanks for the conversion, I did end up with a similar result which I've duly handed in (this photo club lark is a full time job!).
Thanks again
Tim
PS going to Anglesey area next week, can you recommend any places to visit?
