Some MIT students sent a weather balloon tied to a beer cooler with a cheap canon into space and actually got photos. Pretty cool.

How many students will be sending a beer cooler into low orbit now that it has been done and the details made public? I thought it was cool! Got any cameras to donate?

I actually do have old HP point and shoot with a busted screen. It still takes pics though.

Sure ... MIT student's have it all figured out.

If I had attempted something like this the styrofoam cooler would have fell directly on someone's head and my little $148 experiment would have turned into a $100 million dollar lawsuit!

Not to worry though ... I don't have $100 million.

Thanks for this! I think I'm going to get a Powershot G9 or one of the many other hackable Powershot cameras for timelapse photography. One hack can even automatically fire the shutter when it senses movement or lightning... I'm tempted to send one to space!

This is awesome!

Might be something about going to college in the Midwest vs MIT, but all the coolers I was around during college were usually full of beer...
