This is about as "California" as we can get this time of year.
The male tarantulas are out searching for the females in the fall.
The neighborhood kids, who know I'm always looking for cool critters, ran to find me when they saw him.
He was very cooperative for a few pictures before I moved him to a safe place to continue his search. I like this angle because you can see the red hairs on the abdomen and legs. I Was laying flat on the ground in front of him with a beanbag for these shots, and it is an unchanged/unmanipulated environment.
Comments and suggestions before I post on the macro forum in a couple days? thanks..

The itsy-bitsy spider went up the water spout...and ate the chimney
Nice shot! Man, that thing is big...and hairy! We see a lot of them here in the Foothills. They look like little army tanks going across the roads. I would make one suggestion: It looks a little soft, so you might sharpen it just a tad.
I'll keep a few around to rent, if you need them...

I'm not a big fan of spiders, but tarantulas are just too cool. Great shots.

Arachanophobia Tarantulas are cool, on one of the trips prospecting when i forgot my camera I missed the chance to record a tarantula Hawk dragging what was probably an unfortunate male spider to it's burrow off the side of the road. The wasp was about a third of the size of the spider. I am gla dI got to see it for real. Sandy nice comp and welldone.

Brings back some great childhood memories of exploring the open hills near the neighborhood. Although I probably would have brought it back to you in a glass jar or something, to photograph. :)
I like all the varied vegetation in the image... makes for a nice backdrop.
