Anyone here travelled in Turkey? I'm leaving in about a week, the first time I've left the country in over a decade. We'll spend a little time in Istanbul, then head to the northeast corner of the country, where we'll see big mountains, river canyons, ruined Georgian and Armenian churches, and hopefully some fall color (though we might be a bit early). Depending on how things fall out, we may go through Cappadocia on the way back to Istanbul.

A lot of the shooting out east should be in my landscape photography comfort zone. But especially in Istanbul, I expect I'll be trying a lot of street scenes and some architecture. Any advice for a beginner in those areas? I'm especially wondering if it would be worth picking up a monopod or something like a Gorillapod for interiors. If anyone's been there, I'd be curious to know about Turkish attitudes towards tripods and serious shooting inside the attractions.

All advice and moral support is appreciated!

Whenever I travel abroad, my single best resource of info. is the Lonely Planet 'Thorn Tree' forums.
Register, then select 'Turkey' from the drop down list at the 'Europe - Eastern Europe and the Caucasus' forum and post your question. If you have time, browse through the topics and see if there are any good tips.

Best of luck on what sounds like an amazing trip!

I went to Turkey about 10 years ago...wonderful place, deliciously different from the U.S. I would definitely take at least a gorilla pod, and shoot some at night. The mosque and spires of Instanbul are illuminated at night. Absolutely beautiful city!

Thanks guys! I've been working the LP forums a bit, as well as some Turkey-specific ones, but there's nothing like hearing directly from a photographer. I'm definitely taking my tripod for landscapes; a monopod would really just be for the city, and maybe Cappadocia. They're cheap enough that I'll probably go for it.

Jackson,
lived in that area for a few years but back in the mid-60's. So can't help much with the Turkey of today...it has become quite "Westernized" since my exploits there.

If it were me I would probably concentrate on shooting in the smaller towns in the East...those areas that have not been affected by the Western culture as many of the towns/cities in the Western part of the country. Back then it was frowned upon to take pics of the women. If you choose to do so probably best to do it with a telephoto and not be obvious about it.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I traveled in Turkey for 3 or so weeks back in 2004. But I mostly went along the southern coast from near Syria up to the western coast. So I don't have much advice for where you're going.

Should be an awesome trip. Since my trip I've always wanted to return to see the Kackar Mountains in the north. The photos I've seen look pretty amazing.
