The sycamore larvae?
A grab shot on the way out of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust HQ .
I'm no macro photographer but loved the colours this larvae has .
Assistance in the aperture ( focus stack?) comp , head up /head down and its location in the frame would be most appreciated.
Techs
D300/Sig 70 200 + 36mm ext tube at 170mm .HH
F5 1/100th , ISO 200
Thanking you in advance.

Mark I find f11 to f16 is normally required for macro but this is amazing detail for f5. Composition looks fine to me. Wish I could get grab shots like this

Very nice grab shot Mark

As Maggie says f11 to f16 is the norm.

As an aside I found one of these little chaps whilst walking my dog on Thursday

A very nicely detailed image for a grab shot. Can't confirm the id though sorry.

a very impressive looking caterpillar, nicely captured Mark. A bit more DOF would have helped, but potentially at the expense of the very nice background.

Comps great Mark :wavey:

Head up would be better, and f11 would be ideal on the D300 but that would put you on something like a 20th so well into the tpod scenario.

You could have made an emergency tripod out of young Mr.Snape and shot a quick 5 frames - manual focus single shot - just changing the focus point slightly with each shot. Perhaps even upping the iso to 400 to help freeze any motion in the subject.

Then you could use something like Helicon to stack it - or do it the hard way manually in PS.

Nice image, seems very slightly soft, but hey can't complain, the image has worked.
