Talk about luck. I am looking at the possibility of being in Cheyenne, Wyoming and having 4 free days at the Columbus Day Holiday in mid October.
I'd have a car and 4 days to go in search of fall color. I've been through Vedauwoo and upinto the Snowy Range in the summer but never in the fall. I've seen some threads with color at Vedauwoo but not sure how long it lasts.
Would there be any fall color left in Wyoming then? What about the Laramie Mountains up near Casper?
Or has the fall color moved south by then?
Other suggestions for that area? I'd be willing to drive.
Thanks for any info.

I have seen some color in the Medicine bow NF south of Laramie around the 2nd week of October but things seem to be turning a bit earlier so you may miss out. It may be a good time to get cottonwoods on the North Platte over near Saratoga.

Hi Darren. Unfortunately, you're probably going to miss most of the color. It usually peaks in the last week of September. The Snowy Range has relatively few aspen and isn't the best place for fall color. The Sierra Madres, located about 1.5 hours west of the Snowies past Saratoga, have some beautiful aspen stands though I can't say when they peak. I’m guessing it might be a little late but it still may be worth a look. There may still be some good pockets in early October in the Vedauwoo area. The Blair area in particular, located on the western edge of Vedauwoo (contact me if you’d like directions), is a treasure trove of cool rock formations, lots of pockets of aspen, and brightly colored foliage. The weather can be snowy or foggy that time of year and can make for some nice moody shots. Here's one I took there a few years back in mid-October: http://www.brettdeacon.com/photo.php?id=31&gallery=Vedauwoo. Let me know if I can help. Heck, let me know if you’d like some company as I’d love to get out and take some pictures out there myself.

Thanks fellas. Just the sort of info I was looking for.
I had been looking at maps and a little Googling and I think I am going to try for Vedauwoo, the Snowy's and then over to Sierra Madre. If conditions are too poor I'll cut down toward RMNP. That gives me some shot at rocks, color, and alpine environments in a few days time.
Now we have the waiting game to see if plans are foced to be changed between now and then. I'll post back and drop a line when its all finalized.
Thanks!

Well it looks like my week got changed around a little. Now I'll be driving up from Texas and will do the Sand Dunes this weekend and then going up through Steamboat to spending Mon-Wed in the Snowy's. I hope the road is still open when I get there......
