Sucker for Sunrises

The late Galen Rowell used to encourage his students to shoot every sunrise and sunset possible since we are all limited to one each for every day and, as was too tragically true in his case, our lives are all far too short on this beautiful earth God has given us!

Shot this one from the dam at Lake Conway a couple weeks back.

D300; 17-55 f2.8 @26mm; f8.0; 1/20 sec shot hand held from car window on bean bag rest.

Have a great day!

Dave, nice shot.

The uniformity of color contrasted with the shadows in the clouds and on the water makes for a pleasing rendition. The cloud texture is especially nice. I'm impressed by the apparent lack of noise with the D300. I was not having that much success with mine above 540 ISO in low light.

What program, if any, are you using for "noise reduction".

Thanks, Larry!

I've been very pleased with the high ISO capabilities of my 300. I regularly shoot at 800 and have even found that in some instances I'll get even better images at 1000!

This particular shot was made at 100 with -0.67 exposure compensation so noise wasn't a great concern, but when it is I use Noise Ninja in CS4 and have had excellent results.

It's going to be funny one day when we all show up at the same time shooting these sunrise, sunsets! Nice shot Bro. Dave. The mellow colors are so pleasant. You are the master from the beanbag!

Thanks to all for your kind remarks. It's good to know that I'm not the only one with a weakness for these kinds of shots!

Zack, thanks for the heads up on Noiseware. I've used Neat Image and Noise Ninja but am always on the lookout for a better tool. I'll have to give it a shot.

Matt, just look for an old preacher hangin' out of the window of a gold Hyundai Santa Fe. That'll most likely be me! I look forward to meeting you. I'd love to try and keep up with you on one of your treks to those great waterfalls you've been shooting lately.

Karla, that's me--king of the beanbag!!! :jump: I've been thinking about publising a book -- The Lazy Man's Guide to Photography. Seriously, since my surgery last summer and subsequent chemo I've had to learn to adapt till I get my "wind" back. I've been surprised what I've been able to accomplish from the window of my car. It's kind of become a "quest" now to see just what kind of variety I can accomplish without ever getting out of the car. Dont' worry, though, my tripod is always handy and I always have on my hiking boots when I go out! :wavey: If we ever all DO show up on some morning breakfast is on me!

Geez Karla 6:30? I'm glad someone got to sleep in. I have to be at work at 6:30 and work is 30 minutes from home.

David I will be looking for you, and you are welcome anytime for a waterfall adventure.
