I'm in the process of upgrading/replacing some filters. There are lots of quality choices out there and just wondering if there's any sort of consensus out there about the best (unlikely I'm sure but a guy can hope) and cost/quality continuum. For example, I've heard excellent things about the B&W multicoated and the Singh Ray LB but is there a $100 difference?
Thanks

Kurt: I have a number of screw on Hoyas and a Singh Ray warming polarizer for a Cokin system. I like them both and can't honestly say that either polarizes better than the other. I bought the Singh Ray when I was still shooting film and wanted the warming effect but with digital capture its kind of a moot point. One thing to consider is how thick the mount is. I get some vignetting on my wide angle lenses sometimes with the Hoyas and will often have to use the Singh Ray to combat it.>=))>

Another very satisfied Hoya user. There's really no need to spend lots of money to get a good quality polarizer, although you certainly can if you wish.

I have both B+W and Hoya. Don't see any difference, just make sure you get multi-coated one. I think Hoya might have a new one that takes less light away.

Depending on what size you need, check out the Nikon Circular Polarizer II. I just replaced my b+w 77mm polarizer with one of the Nikon filters, not because there was anything wrong with the optical quality of the b+w brand, but their thin mount filter doesn't have any front threads so you can't add another filter or Cokin/Lee adapter on top of that for ND grads. The Nikon II filters are just as slim - no vignetting with most wide angle lenses - but do have the front threads.

To continue the discussion, how do you compare the Tiffen circular polarizers to the B&W & Singh Ray? I'm using Tiffen & they seem OK but I don't have anything to compare to.

Any really good Polarizer will work well for you, but I recently own both a B+W & Singh Ray Color Combo (Warm polarizer w/intensifier built in as well). I did little test comparing each polarizer next to each other. I found the Singh Ray was a better filter, not only are the colors little more vibrant since it has a intensifier built in, but the colors looked more pure. Blues like in the sky were much nicer, greens same way. I was impressed by how much better the Singh Ray images looked over the B+W filter.
Another person with a plus for Hoya, and definitely like others recommend the multicoated ones. I have B+W and Hoya for different lenses, and I truly see no difference. Cant compare with Singh-Ray as I have never used them.
