Here's another from a recent short session with a co-operative Lesser Marsh Grasshopper in poor light conditions. The dilemma I had here was how to compose this image - should the plant stem be central, even though this means the grasshopper is off centre? Or should the whole subject (i.e. plant and grasshopper) be central, which means the plant stalk is slightly to the right. I've tried a variety of different compositions, even adding canvas on the left and putting the plant 1/3 of the way in from the right. But to my eyes this one looks the best. Any thoughts gratefully received.

It looks good as is, however what about 1cm off the right and 3cm's off the bottom.... these measurements correspond to the image as presented here..... just a thought
this will put the grasshopper up into the left corner slightly and the flower will be just in from the edge on the right

I like it as it is now. I would not crop it more.
Great shot.

Maybe a little off the stalk but personally I wouldn't crop the sides any closer. Nice work Matt

Superb composition as it is. You even might have taken the shot further away with the Grasshopper smaller in the frame and more of the flower stem visible.

Works for me as is. Love the expression captured.

Excellent. I like the muted colours/lighting and the comp is just right for me.

I didn't realise the insect world had 'catalogue models' - looks like he/she has got the pose off to a tee. Joking apart, I find the image, or rather the 'expression', quite humourful.
Re the comp, the off-centre insect looks spot on to me because, simply, it works well in this instance.
Cheers,
Chris
Nice shot

I am not a fan of macro, but I really like this

I think you've got it spot on. With the stem slightly to the right and the grasshopper to the left it's a well balanced composition. Great shot.
