Hi
I have GPS co-ordinates manually written down that I want to put in the metadata in Lightroom2 Is there a specific spot or present? Do most people use UTM or LL? On a mac is there anyway to easily do this?
Thanks in advance
Lindy
We add it using the File Info feature in Photoshop, along with caption, release and copyright info. It's pretty handy for clients to have the info there in a file, and handy for us to have the GPS on occasion.

I think that latitude and longitude are becoming the more accepted coordinate system these days.
It has been all along among folks who make their livings with navigation, and most references you see to GPS coordinates are "come latelies" to navigation. I work extensively with pilots and mariners, and throughout the evolution of GPS they've continued to use lat/lon. The big difference I think is a population that has always had big navigation charts marked in lat/lon, while adopting GPS to find positions there. There are nav charts with GPS "lines" superposed along with the lat/lon, but on charts anyway, it's sure easier to refer to the lat/lon on the sides than to follow the GPS lines. GPS is used in high precision work such as geology and surveying, but always along with the lat/lon.
I see GPS coordinates used mostly by folks with no other reference than their GPS machines. And frankly I'm heading that way. I've got the nav charts for my home area and continue to use those, but as I travel I don't bother buying the nav charts any more except if I'm going offshore. And for personal record keeping on photos I'm more and more just reading and recording the GPS.

I think that the free Microsoft Pro Photo Tools will add the GPS co-ordinates to your photo file for you easily if I remember correctly.

Although I think you can do it manually in PS Bridge CS3 too easily enough into the metadata section for GPS.
There are a number of free tools around to do this. I use GpicSync to automatically geotag my photos based on the time stamp of the photo and the location in my GPS track log that corresponds to that time stamp. Basically, I switch on my Garmin and forget about it. Later I grab the track log from my Garmin ( (I have the Vista HCX) and use GPicSync to embed the GPS data into the proper EXIF tag. It's all automatic and easy. You should make sure that both your GPS unit and camera clock are on the same time. However, if they are not, you can simply enter the time offset into GPicSync and the software deals with it.
I expect there are other software packages that do the same thing. For me GPicSync is free and it works.
