Sneffels Summit Sunset
I took advantage of the blue skies yesterday and hiked up Sneffels to watch the sunset from the top. Here's my favorite shot.

Oly E-620 @ 7mm, three exposure manual blend.

Thanks for any comments/critiques!

Here's another one while I'm at it...

Great job on the blend and I love the way the snow is glowing in that first shot. Excellent as usual. There is a touch of flare on the the middle layer of peaks on the right side it looks like. The shadow of the summit in the second shot is just killer.

I love the summit shadow in #2, but I like #1 even more! I was under the misguided impression that while I was gone last week, all the snow happened along the Front Range and back towards the NW from there. Glad to see some in the mighty San Juans.

Jack, great light and blending. I love the shadow in the second; so unusual.

BTW, how are the aspen looking down there? The San Juans are about the only thing left to salvage this fall season.

That summit shadow does it for me, especially the way it mirrors the sunlit peak to its right.
What a view!!

The summit shadow is really nice, but the colors and foreground element in #1 are really nice! Well done!

Em, great photos Jack, how did you get down?

#1 is amazing!

Sweet! Make sure you get up there again at the end of the week, when theres a little more snow to march up in

Jack,

These are stunning. That first one is terrific!

Very Cool, Jack. I was shooting you from CR5 (but didn't know I was shooting you  )
The bands of color to the west as we were packing up were wild. Too bad there were no clouds to bring some of that over the range.

Outstanding shots Jack,
Hiking up and down ice covered cliffs in the dark...better you than me!
But then I don't have any images remotely like these either.

(Still not gonna do it.)

Sweet Shots!

Thanks for the comments!

Morris - Yes I troubles with flare in this shot, even though the sun had already set. The sky was bright enough I guess to flare in the big bulbous 7-14mm lens. I tried shading the lens with my hands as best I could but it didn't help. So I did try to tone down the flare spots in PS, but it's so hard to perfectly eliminate them.

Craig - I had a good view of the CR5 aspen fields; they looked like about 20% turned. As far as I could tell the colors looked healthy enough, but I was very far away so it's hard to say.

Bill/Chuck - I hiked down the standard route via headlamp (I have a nice bright headlamp). I've done that route 3 times before, including once before in the dark, so I wasn't too worried about it. It's pretty easy in fact, except for one little scrambly section. Oh, and there was very little snow on anything but the directly north aspects.

fantastic Images, you have a fantastic ability to take beautiful sunset/sunrise photos without the need for clouds. something I really need to work on.

They're both great in their own way. The snow is a nice bonus!

I love how you spontaneously decide to climb a 14er to shoot a sunset. I need at least a week of motivational pep talk to even consider that  Apparently efforts like that pay off really well judging by these images!

These are wonderful, Jack. I like them both, but that first one knocks my socks off. Really well done!

Jack.... when you say you are a 'mountain photographer' , I think you are one of the best among them. Amazing first shot... amazing light... I think it is some difficult light to capture as well as you did... :toast:
